DOWN TOWN - シュガーベイブ

Haven't listened to Sugar Babe since maybe...April.

Downtown - Sugar Babe

A rainbow-colored dusk has fallen
There's a little chill in the wind
Saturday night is hoppin'

The street corners are always a crush of people
but even so this is a cheerful city
Everyone always dressed to the nines

Even a gloomy mood
will brighten up right quick
Everyone is lighthearted

Let's head downtown
Let's head downtown
Let's head downtown

Romances that only last the night are fun, too
disappearing like soap bubbles
Tonight's just getting started

Even a gloomy mood
will brighten up right quick
Everyone is lighthearted

Let's head downtown
Let's head downtown
Let's head downtown

Maybe you like my liberties, maybe you don't. We can talk about it in the comments, if you like! I highlighted what I feel are the wonkiest bits.

  1. Hey, I saw this the other day, but it's slipped on to the second page. Anyway, it's interesting to see - I like Sugar Babe. I like the opening line, and I don't think there's a problem with the parts you've highlighted.

If I was looking for things to improve, maybe a couple of places are a little flat, like "cheerful city" and "everyone is lighthearted". Not that I have any brilliant suggestions of what to replace them with.

Anyway, like I say, fun to see. I should probably pay more attention to the lyrics of Japanese songs.

    1. Hey, thanks a lot for the detailed comments!

I agree those spots felt a little weak...but as you said, alternatives are tough. It's also hard to decide how faithful to be when you hit a word like that ><

Will definitely be doing more Sugar Babe at some point, so hope to see you around again :)

  2. Just wondering now what Japanese singers and groups you like best. Is there a post about that? I don't have loads of Japanese music, but I like Yumi Arai, Happy End, Fishmans, The Blue Hearts, and Sugar Babe.

  3. Yeek, sorry for the late reply... The stuff I translate here is a pretty good guide, although I like some anime music and that usually gets translated as the OP or whatnot, so I don't bother.

I'm listen to Okamoto's and Yura Yura Teikoku most often lately. Shintaro Sakamoto's solo album (after Yura Yura Teikoku broke up) is super good. I like some of Tatsuro Yamashita's stuff, too (vocals from Sugar Babe; earlier seems better. I really like the album "Spacy.") My favorite way to branch off of the members of Happy End so far is Shigeru Suzuki's solo stuff, especially "Bandwagon," but most people will recommend Haruomi Hosono who I am not super familiar with yet, outside of "Hosono House" (which sadly does not do a ton for me ._.;). That said, I have a couple YMO albums (although apparently not the best one, which I think someone told me is Solid State Survivor...) I also like Perfume, Shugo Tokumaru, Base Ball Bear. I dunno, I have more Japanese music than I listen to regularly. Like Momoiro Clover and Tokyo Girls' Style are fun, but I barely listen to them at all... When I was in high school I was listening to SMAP and Tomoe Shinohara.

I want to learn more bands and stuff, branch out, but it seems like maybe I'm kind of picky, or I just get stuck on people I like *_* I think I'm gonna buy Sakanaction's 5th album and see how I feel ;D
